Welcome to the Winter 2024 Edition of Sepsis Chatter!

Our newest video presentation is titled: Sepsis Chatter-A Review of Abstraction Challenges Part II. This presentation encompasses abstraction guidelines and their specific additional instructions for two data elements that have generated in depth interpretation discussions over the past few months. The following sub-topics will be covered in detail:

  • Selecting the correct earliest infection date/time when abstracted from provider notes.
  • Initial Hypotension presentation and timing- applying the guidance accurately.
  • Initial Hypotension criteria met prior to arrival- applying additional instructions included in the guidance.

Each of the covered topics will include specific abstraction guidance that is defined in the current CMS Specifications Manual for National Hospital Inpatient Quality Measures. We will review the application of these guidelines using examples and rationale.

*This presentation is based on the information included in the following versions of the Specifications Manual for National Hospital Inpatient Quality version 5.14 Discharges 07-01-23 (3Q23) through 12-31-23 (4Q23) and version 5.15a  Discharges 1/1/2024 through 6/30/2024

*For the most accurate guidance, please refer to the version of the Specifications Manual that corresponds to the Discharge Date(s) that are being reviewed.
