Welcome to the September 2022 Edition of Sepsis Chatter!

Our newest video presentation is titled: Sepsis Chatter – Blood Culture Collection and Acceptable Delay.

This presentation begins with a review of the current CMS abstraction guidance related to Blood Culture Collection and What qualifies as a Blood Culture Collection Acceptable Delay. We will review the application of these guidelines by using examples and providing rationale.

Discussion will focus on the following:

  • Abstracting a Blood Culture Collection date and time using the specified time frame parameters
  • Determine if a Blood Culture was collected for the patient diagnosed with severe sepsis prior to an initial IV antibiotic administration
  • Recognize if a Blood Culture Acceptable Delay exists in scenarios when Blood Cultures are collected following the initial IV antibiotic administration

Each of these covered topics will include specific abstraction guidance that is defined in the current CMS Specifications Manual for National Hospital Inpatient Quality Measures.

*This presentation is based on the information included in the most current version of the Specifications Manual for National Hospital Inpatient Quality Measures version 5.12 (Discharges July 1 through December 31, 2022) *For the most accurate guidance, please refer to the version of the Specifications Manual that corresponds to the Discharge Date(s) that are being reviewed.
