CTR Coding Break – Abstracting Stomach Cancer

Oncology Coding Break

Published/Updated Date: September 25, 2023

In this 60 minute presentation we will review several aspects of abstracting stomach primaries to help attendees gain confidence in abstracting this sometimes very difficult site. We’ll review the anatomy and function of the stomach and discuss clinical workup and diagnostic studies related to the diagnosis of stomach cancers. We’ll provide instruction on appropriately assigning primary site codes and review histology codes and reportability for specific diagnosis years. We’ll review site specific data items applicable for the stomach for the current years and forward and review AJCC 8th Edition staging tables and groups as well as SEER Summary Staging classifications. There will be a review of some helpful abstracting and coding tips to aid in abstracting self-assurance. And lastly, we will review a case scenario for stomach cancer and discuss multiple data field items with coding rationale for correct coding examples.
