Q&A with Beth

Q:     How did you become involved in the cancer registry profession?

A:     I graduated college with a degree in the HIM field so I first pursued coding/billing. I didn’t enjoy it so I knew I had to find something else. At that time, I had a friend in the cancer registry field so I started asking her questions & quickly grew an interest in the field. As I worked FT in the coding field, I also pursued the AHIMA cancer registry program. I completed the online program & sat for the CTR exam without any cancer registry experience & I was pleased with a successful passing score.

Q:     What advice do you give to other individuals considering pursuing their CTR?

A:     An individual that is pursuing the CTR would benefit from observing a cancer registry department, if available. NCRA offers a mentoring program in which a mentor can be assigned to an individual pursuing the cancer registry field to help with guidance & education. They may also find benefit from reviewing the NCRA & the SEER website. The NCRA can also be followed on Facebook. I found it extremely helpful with developing professional relationships with other CTRs as well.

Q:     What do you feel you have gained while working at Registry Partners?

A:     By working at Registry Partners, I have gained a tremendous amount of knowledge, confidence, & lifelong friendships. I have also developed my organizational & communication skills. I find that participation in the QC monthly calls has been incredibly valuable in developing my registry skills as well.
