Q & A with Kimberly:

Q: How did you become interested in the CTR/Cancer Registry profession?

A: I’d never heard of the Cancer Registry profession until a local magazine profiled someone at a local hospital; I never even knew that kind of job existed! Coincidentally, I read the article while I was undergoing treatment for cancer myself and beginning to realize that while I’ve run countless 10ks and 5ks to raise money for cancer research, I wanted to be more in the trenches of finding a cure. As a cancer survivor, I knew that I not only wanted to make my own harrowing story count toward the greater good, I wanted to do that for others who have to make the same, life-changing journey I did.

Q: What tips can you provide that may help a CTR improve their abstraction skills or become a more efficient abstractor?

A: It can be hard to keep up with all the rules and changes in our profession, but it’s so important! Besides that, I seek out the timeline behind each patient’s story; taking notes in chronological order helps me keep the details in the right places. That way, when I’m abstracting, I know where to look to quickly find each piece of information.

Q: How have you changed your work habits working in a remote environment?

A: I’ve always been a self-disciplined, detail-oriented person – I think most CTRs are … but working from home has certainly brought new opportunities and challenges. It’s wonderful to be able to manage your own time, affect the balance of work and play as you need it, and create whatever office atmosphere suits you best (no-one else has to listen to my Broadway show tunes but me!). It can be challenging, however, to stay organized, to handle all of the small office details (am I out of paper? Did I order printer ink?) and even be an advocate for yourself if you are having issues since working remotely means no one is sitting in the room with you to see if you’re struggling. Overall, I love working remotely, especially for RP!
