Welcome to the March 2023 Edition of Sepsis Chatter! Our newest video presentation is titled: Sepsis Chatter-Severe Sepsis and Septic Shock: Crystalloid Fluid Administration Part II

This presentation builds upon the information in the previous Sepsis Chatter presentation titled: Sepsis Chatter – Severe Sepsis and Septic Shock: Crystalloid Fluid Administration Part I

The following topics will be explored:

  • Determining the acceptable time frame to initiate crystalloid fluids in the setting of septic shock, severe sepsis with initial hypotension, and when multiple trigger events are present.
  • Identifying the crystalloid fluid administration time based on how the provider orders are written.
  • Calculating the target volume completely infused/end time when a single infusion is administered and when multiple infusions are running concurrently.

Each of the covered topics will include specific abstraction guidance that is defined in the current (v13.0) CMS Specifications Manual for National Hospital Inpatient Quality Measures Discharges 1/1-6/30/2023. We will review the application of these guidelines using examples and rationale.

*This presentation is based upon: The Specifications Manual for National Hospital Inpatient Quality V5.13 Discharges 01-01-23 (1Q23) through 06-30-23 (2Q23)

**For the most accurate guidance, please refer to the version of the Specifications Manual that corresponds to the Discharge Date(s) that are being reviewed.
