Recap of Pennsylvania Association of Cancer Registrars & New York Cancer Registrars Association Regional Conference – Wilkes Barre, PA

October 4 – 6, 2017

Submitted by Tracy Loar, CTR – I had the pleasure of attending the PACR & NYCRA Regional Educational Conference titled “Betting on a Brighter Future” in Wilkes Barre, PA at the Mohegan Sun Pocono Hotel/Casino.

The topics presented at this years conference ranged from Palliative/Hospice Care, RQRS, Radiation Oncology, Radiation Coding Guidelines, Colorectal Cancer, Robotic Thoracic Surgery, and AJCC 8th Edition staging updates.

I found that the presentation by Dr. Tanya Kumaria about Palliative/Hospice Care of the Cancer Patient to be particularly interesting. Dr. Kumaria did a great job explaining what palliative care was and the difference between palliative care and hospice.

Another highlight from the conference was Dr. Brian Mott’s presentation about “Robotic Thoracic Surgery – Advancements in Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgery”. Dr. Mott included a video of a lobectomy being performed through the view from the Da Vinci surgery camera. This was a perspective that registrars don’t get to see every day.

Overall the conference was extremely informative and I learned something new from all of the presentations.

Registry Partners raffled two Visa Gifts Cards during the conference and the lucky winners were Leslie Simboli (Left)  and Mistie Ellis (Right). Congratulations to Leslie and Mistie!
