The September Oncology Coding Break is Part 3 of a 4 Part Series on the Female Reproductive System. This month, we will focus on the Cervix Uteri.

To get things started, Melissa Meador, ph.D., ODS-C will discuss cervix anatomy, with a particular focus on the type of cells that make up the cervix and the endocervix, as well as explain the transitional zone. Then, Melissa will discuss Human Papilloma Virus and the organs most effected by this virus. Melissa will explain exactly how the HPV virus infects its host, the most common strains of the HPV virus, and the testing methods used to detect this virus. We have specific histology codes that should be used when the cervical cancer is associated with or independent of HPV, which Melissa explains.

Then, Heather Donohue, ODS-C, will discuss surgical treatments, pointing out which treatments qualify for path staging, and which do not. Heather will briefly discuss the most common systemic therapies, as well as the radiation therapies for cervical cancers. Heather gives an in-depth explanation of coding radiation therapy when more than 3 phases are given, and how this type of scenario should be captured in the coding fields, as well as the text.

Be sure to join us for Part 4 of the series, which is a Special 1-Hour Live Oncology Coding Break on All Gyn Sites–Cancers of the Female Reproductive System!
