As the final installment in our four-part Oncology Coding Break series, this session covers the coding essentials for cancers of the female reproductive system. Throughout this series, we’ve explored a variety of cancer coding topics to strengthen skills in histology, grade determination, solid tumor rules, and SSDI coding. In this closing session, we focus on unique considerations for reproductive system cancers, bringing together everything covered in our previous sessions.

Key Topics Discussed

  1. Histology & Solid Tumor Rules
    • Female reproductive system cancers are categorized under the “Other Sites” module in the Solid Tumor Rules. In this Coding Break, we discussed specific rules for cancer types like vulva, vagina, cervix, ovary, primary peritoneal carcinoma, and fallopian tube.
  1. Grading Guidelines in the Grade Manual
    • This Coding Break delved into multiple schemas, including vulva, vagina and cervix, cervix sarcoma, corpus carcinoma and carcinosarcoma, as well as ovary, primary peritoneal carcinoma, and fallopian tube cancers.
    • For example, endometrial carcinomas have unique grading rules, where only low grade (FIGO grade 2) and high grade (FIGO grade 3) assignments are allowed.
  1. Staging & Procedure Data Items
    • The presentation covered staging essentials, including AJCC “f” and “sn” suffixes, sentinel lymph node data items, and a comprehensive review of SSDI data items for accurate case documentation.
  1. Uterine Cancer Chapters in Detail
    • With three chapters dedicated to uterine cancers in the Grade Manual (corpus adenosarcoma, corpus carcinoma & carcinosarcoma, and corpus sarcoma), this session provided essential guidance on each schema.
  1. Treatment Approaches for Female Reproductive System Cancers
    • We discussed critical treatment options, such as omentectomy and total abdominal hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy.
