Recap of the Indiana Cancer Registrars Association 39th Annual Conference

November 9th – 10th, 2017

“KEYS TO SUCCESS”

Submitted by: Taylor Parker, BA, BS, RHIA, CTR – I had the honor of representing Registry Partners at the 39th Annual Indiana Fall Conference. The theme for the meeting was “Keys To Success”.

While at the conference I was able to network with fellow Indiana CTRs and share information about Registry Partners with the attendees. The conference kicked off with guest speaker, Kathy Nelson, who incorporated several team-building exercises to emphasize the “keys” each person within the registry field holds to the success of cancer registry and their respective departments.

Louanne Currence, RHIT, CTR, continued the theme Thursday and Friday and provided several important keys to the AJCC 8th Edition Staging changes that has everyone in the registry world at the edge of their seat.  The new changes will help improve patient treatment and outcomes and more accurately reflect the cancer disease process for each site.  In-depth presentations were given of the major staging changes to the head and neck, colon, bladder, breast, and prostate chapters. We also worked together and attempted to abstract breast cases applying the 8th edition staging rules.

The key, be adaptable and open to change; and hopefully you have a great QC team to lead you through the changes! I left the meeting feeling a little bit apprehensive combined with a lot of excitement about the direction of our profession.

Registry Partners raffled off two Visa gift cards.  The lucky winners were Martha Hill and Jennifer Sepiol. Congratulations!
